What are Muonio and Pallas like, and who are they for?

Muonio is a village on Finland's western border, and Pallas is the fell area and hotel to its east. Together they are the opposite of Levi: smaller ski areas and a national park on the doorstep. Discover Muonio counts over 20 fells and over 200 lakes in the area.

This section rests on published sources, not our own trip.

It suits these readers:

  • Hikers and ski tourers. The park's Hetta-Pallas trail is its best-known route, and Metsähallitus lists hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and cycling.
  • Cross-country skiers. The Olos network is reported as over 200 km, linked to Pallas and Jeris.
  • People who like small resorts. The tourism association lists two ski resorts in Muonio, Olos and Pallas.

It suits others less well:

  • Anyone who wants a big lift system. Olos reports 10 slopes and 4 lifts. For a large resort see Ylläs or Levi.
  • Travellers without a plan for transport. Distances between Muonio, Olos and Pallas are 6 to 30 km, and the airport transfer runs only if someone has booked.

The park is large. Metsähallitus gives its area as 1,026 km², established to its current size in 2005, with the original Pallas-Ounastunturi park founded in 1938. Discover Muonio says Taivaskero, at 809 m, is the highest Pallas peak, and the Olympic flame was lit there in 1952.

How do you get to Muonio and Pallas?

Fly to Kittilä, then take a bus or shuttle taxi to Muonio in about an hour. The flight from Helsinki is about 1 h 20 min. From Rovaniemi, the bus takes about 3 h 10 min. From Kolari railway station, a shuttle taxi reaches Muonio in about an hour and must be booked 24 hours ahead.

On weekdays the pre-booked service runs the route Harriniva, Seo, Muonio, Olos, Särkijärvi, Torassieppi, Jeris, Levi and Kittilä Airport for Finnair flights, and it runs only if someone has booked. Always confirm times and prices with the operator. Our Lapland airports guide explains why Kittilä is the practical gateway.

Tourism pages also point to the Seo service station in Muonio centre as the onward hub. At Pallas, the park's Pallastunturi gate is at Pallastunturintie 557, and overnight stays in its parking area are prohibited.

When is the best time to visit Muonio and Pallas?

February to April is the best skiing window: median snow is deepest in March and the days are lengthening. December is dark. November is the awkward month. Discover Muonio says winter runs from October to mid-May.

These are Finnish Meteorological Institute figures for Muonio village. The fells at Pallas sit higher, so expect them to differ.

What this means:

  • Light. The sun stays below a flat horizon from about 10 December to 2 January in Muonio village (our calculation from US Naval Observatory data). That is a longer polar night than Ylläs or Levi, because Muonio lies further north.
  • November. Metsähallitus lists the Pallas-Yllästunturi inaccessible period as mid-October to November, and says permanent snow usually forms in late November or December. See our Lapland in November guide.
  • Aurora. FMI says roughly 50% of dark, cloudless nights at Lapland ski resorts. Muonio is not named, and the odds rise further north. See the northern lights guide.
  • Spring. Our March guide covers light and conditions, and the Pallas ski-resort listing on Muonio's tourism site calls the Hetta to Pallas route the highlight of spring.

What is there to do in Muonio and Pallas?

Hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile or husky safaris cover most of it. In the park, Metsähallitus lists hiking, cycling, skiing and snowshoeing, with campfire huts and wilderness cafés. Outside the park, Muonio's tourism site lists northern lights tours, canoeing, fishing and reindeer safaris.

Practical details:

  • Hetta-Pallas trail. It is the park's classic long route. Metsähallitus advises pre-booked taxis for transfers on longer routes, and hikers starting in Hetta must cross Ounasjärvi lake first.
  • Olos. Muonio's tourism listing for the resort reports 10 slopes, 4 lifts, a kids' slope and over 200 km of tracks, open December to April. Its first-snow cross-country track opens in October, and the "Tykkikisat" early-season ski competition is held there.
  • Pallas. The ski resort says it keeps natural snow on its slopes rather than making artificial snow, and its slopes are not mechanically treated. Check the current slope count with the resort, because the listing we found is dated.
  • Harriniva. A family-owned operator in Muonio since 1973, offering winter packages with transfers from Kittilä airport or Kolari station, according to its own site. It is one example, not a ranking.
  • Park rules. The park is a nature reserve and a reindeer husbandry area. Keep your distance from reindeer, respect Sámi sacred sites, and use fires only where designated.

For help planning the days, see our itinerary guide. Our what to wear guide covers layers for January's -13 °C average.
