Which Lapland airport should you fly into?

Fly into the airport closest to where you'll sleep. Finavia runs five Lapland airports, Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Ivalo, Kuusamo and Kemi-Tornio, and their catchments barely overlap. A cheap flight into the wrong one can cost you a three-hour road leg on arrival day.

Rovaniemi gets most of the searches, and for good reason: Finavia reports over 1.1 million passengers there in 2025, against 446,000 at Kittilä, 249,000 at Ivalo, 129,000 at Kuusamo and 35,000 at Kemi-Tornio (Finavia, Lapland airports). But busiest isn't the same as best for you. Roughly: Rovaniemi for Santa Claus Village and the city, Kittilä for Levi and Ylläs, Ivalo for Saariselkä and Inari, Kuusamo for Ruka.

My verdict, based on the distances below: if your resort is not Rovaniemi, resist the Rovaniemi flight unless it saves real money. The distance from Rovaniemi to Levi is about 170 km on Levi's own arrival page, and the Ruka public bus link from Rovaniemi runs on specific weekdays only. A modest fare saving rarely survives a long transfer.

Which airport for which resort?

The table matches each resort to its nearest airport using distances and times quoted by Finavia, Finnair and the resorts themselves. Where an official source gives only a distance or only a time, I've shown just that rather than invent the other. Recheck bus timetables before you book, as most are published monthly.

Two readings of that table matter more than the rest. First, Ruka is the awkward one: Ruka.fi says its airport bus connects to the Rovaniemi Airport bus only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, so a Rovaniemi landing is a weekday gamble. Second, Ivalo to Inari village is a charter shuttle, not a scheduled bus, which means you book it yourself.

What can you fly to each airport in winter 2026-27?

Finavia's winter season runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027 and counts 37 routes at Rovaniemi, 15 at Kittilä, 9 at Kuusamo, 8 at Ivalo and 2 at Kemi-Tornio (Finavia, 8 October 2026). Routes marked new below begin this winter. Schedules can move, so treat them as a dated snapshot.

Rovaniemi is far ahead on choice. Its full route detail, airlines and booking tips are in our flights to Rovaniemi guide, so I'm keeping it short here. For UK readers the practical shortlist is Gatwick or Newcastle for Rovaniemi, Luton or Liverpool for Kittilä, and Gatwick via airBaltic for Kuusamo.

Easy mistake: assuming Ivalo has direct UK flights. For winter 2026-27 the only new Ivalo route Finavia lists is Munich. I couldn't open British Airways' own page to confirm any Ivalo service this winter, so check that before assuming a direct flight. Finnair via Helsinki is the safe baseline.

How do you connect through Helsinki?

Helsinki is the fallback for every Lapland airport except Enontekiö. Finnair's Lapland page lists Helsinki flights to Ivalo, Kemi, Kittilä, Kuusamo and Rovaniemi, and Finavia describes daily Helsinki connections to the main four airports. Enontekiö is not on Finnair's list.

Finnair's destination pages showed these one-way "from" fares on 25 October 2026. They are page snapshots, not quotes, and vary by date.

AirportHelsinki linkFinnair "from" fare, one way
RovaniemiMultiple flights every day, year-round; flight time 1 h 15 min to 1 h 55 min€59
KittiläDaily connections (Finavia)€59
IvaloDaily connections (Finavia)€69
KuusamoDaily connections (Finavia)€69
Kemi-TornioMultiple days a week€54
OuluListed on Finnair's site€49

Ivalo and Kuusamo run about €10 above Rovaniemi and Kittilä on that snapshot. Over a family of four, that's €80 return, which is worth weighing against a long road leg but rarely enough to justify flying somewhere else.

One caution: a Helsinki connection means two flights on one ticket, so build in a generous layover and book both legs together.

Is Kemi-Tornio, Enontekiö or Oulu worth considering?

Rarely, and only for specific plans. Kemi-Tornio and Enontekiö are small and seasonal in practice, and Oulu is outside Lapland. They matter when the main four airports are sold out or when your actual destination happens to sit next to one of them.

Kemi-Tornio (KEM). Finavia puts the airport 5 minutes from Kemi and about 25 minutes from Tornio, and says there is no regular bus to it. It handled 35,000 passengers in 2025 and has two winter routes, Helsinki and a new Brussels Airlines service. Its draw is the Kemi Snow Castle and the Swedish border at Tornio, not the fell resorts.

Enontekiö (ENF), seasonal. The Enontekiö tourism site says winter brings busy charter traffic and that the airport is open year-round, and Finavia notes it left its network in 2021 and is now run by the municipality (Finavia). I found no scheduled airline route in primary sources, so plan on charter flights only. The nearest scheduled airports, Kittilä and Rovaniemi, are about two hours away by car or bus according to the same site, with a Kittilä bus via Muonio to Hetta and Kilpisjärvi.

Oulu (OUL) as a fallback. Finavia calls it the third busiest airport in Finland, and Finnair sells Helsinki flights to it. But Finavia's Oulu pages list only city buses 8 and 9 and no onward transfers to Lapland. Use Oulu when Lapland airports are sold out, then check VR and Matkahuolto for the onward leg, because I couldn't confirm journey times from a primary source.

What should you check before booking?

Match the airport to your first night's address, then check the airline's date, the bus timetable and the winter end date. Do these four checks and most arrival-day surprises disappear.

  1. Start from your accommodation. Find the airport its own arrival page names. Levi, Ylläs and Ruka each publish one.
  2. Check the day of the week. Many new routes fly twice weekly: easyJet's Kittilä and Rovaniemi services, for example, are on fixed days only. Your holiday dates may need to follow the aircraft.
  3. Check the bus against your flight. Tunturilinjat and Eskelinen timetables follow flights, and Eskelinen's Ivalo shuttle only runs when a flight arrives or departs. Ruka's airport bus must be booked in advance.
  4. Check the end of the season. Finavia's winter season runs to 27 March 2027. Later dates may have fewer routes or none.

For the broader trip, the overnight train is a real alternative to a second flight; see our train vs flight comparison. Once you've picked the airport, look at the Rovaniemi destination guide or the Northern Lights guide if aurora is why you're going.

Sources used here are Finavia's airport and newsroom pages, Finnair's Lapland pages, easyJet's route announcement, Ruka.fi, Levi.fi, Ylläs.fi and Inari municipality. I've not tested the transfers myself, and bus operators change timetables monthly, so verify them on the operator's page on the day you book.
