Search the web for this journey and you will find forum threads that disagree: one says there is no public bus, another lists a Santa's Express. Both are partly right. The buses are real, they are private rather than part of the city's public network, and they go by three names. This guide sorts that out using the operators' own pages, checked on 25 October 2026.
How do you get from Rovaniemi Airport to Santa Claus Village?
Take the Santa's Express or Airport Express bus, or a taxi for the 3 km. Santa Claus Village says the airport is about 3 km away. The printed Santa's Express timetable lists the village stop about five minutes before the airport stop. Local bus 8 also serves the village, but only from the city.
Here is where the forum confusion comes from. Airportbus.fi is the operator behind "Airport Express" and "Santa's Express". The older santaclausbus.fi address now redirects to the same site, and Visit Rovaniemi's Santa Claus Bus page names Airport Express Rovaniemi as the provider, listing it for January to March and October to December. Three names, one company.
One catch worth knowing. The Santa's Express timetable is a single-direction loop from the railway station through the city, Santa Park and Santa Claus Village to the airport. It prints the time each bus reaches the airport, not the time it leaves for the return leg. The route text ends "Airport - Railway", so the bus carries on to the city, but the printed table gives no times for it. Airport Express's own page says it meets arriving flights. For a specific arrival, email the operator (airportexpress@hotmail.fi) or ask the driver at the stop.
Local bus 8 matters if you are already in town. The 2026-27 bus 8 timetable is valid 12 August 2026 to 6 June 2027, and its route runs between the railway station and the Arctic Circle. The airport is not on it. If you ever see a tip telling you to take bus 8 from the airport, treat it as wrong.
How do you get from Rovaniemi Airport to the city centre?
Take the Airport Express (€8 one-way for adults) or a taxi. The airport is about 10 km from the centre, according to Finavia. In winter, Finavia and Visit Rovaniemi both name the Santa Claus Bus and Airport Express as the bus options. Otherwise, Visit Rovaniemi says, taxi is the only choice.
Finavia's airport page confirms that the Airport Express and Santa's Express serve Santa Claus Village and Rovaniemi Railway Station, with tickets sold on the bus. The Santa's Express route also passes the bus station, the Rinteenkulma shopping centre, Aallonkatu, Toripuistikko and a stop at Santa Park (from 31 October 2026), which covers the central streets where many hotels sit.
Taxis are simpler. Finavia lists three taxi platforms in front of the terminal: Taksi Rovaniemi, Lähitaksi Rovaniemi and Menevä. Lähitaksi says its cars wait right outside the arrivals exit and describes the service as around the clock. Taksi Rovaniemi says the same about its drivers. Menevä does not state its hours on the page we checked, so don't count on it at 02:00 without booking.
If you want the price fixed before you leave home, Visit Rovaniemi lists a private airport transfer from Authentic Experiences, starting from €55 and taking 18 minutes, with pickup points at 16 hotels including Scandic Polar, Arctic City Hotel and Santa Claus Holiday Village. It is not wheelchair accessible, and infants must have their own seat.
What do the transfers cost, and how long do they take?
A bus costs €7-8 per adult and a taxi roughly €20 to the village or €35-40 to the centre, with the private transfer fixed at €55 from. The table puts every option side by side, using operator timetables and fares, with our own estimates marked.
| Option | To Santa Claus Village | To city centre | Adult price | How often | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Santa's Express | About 5 min (printed timetable, village stop before airport) | 25-35 min between central stops and airport | €7 two-way (one-way adult fare not listed) | Roughly every 30-60 min, 08:05 to 17:30-19:10 | Budget travellers, one night in town, village-first stays |
| Airport Express | Stops at village on the route | Not published | €8 one-way (€4 child, 4-12) | Meets arriving flights, says 9:00-21:00 | Arrivals within the operating window |
| Taxi, metered | About 3 km; roughly €20 (our estimate) | About 10 km; roughly €35-40 (our estimate) | Tariff: €8.20 + €1.45/km + €0.85/min + €2.50 airport charge | On demand, all hours at two operators | Late arrivals, groups of up to four, heavy luggage |
| Private transfer (pre-booked) | Not listed | 18 min | From €55 | Booked for your flight | Fixed price, hotel pickup, tired children |
| Rental car | About 3 km | About 10 km | Varies by operator | Whenever you collect it | Staying outside town, onward driving |
| Local bus 8 (from city only) | 35 min from railway station to Arctic Circle | Does not serve airport | €3.60 cash or card, €3.30 with Waltti app | Weekdays about every 45 min; weekends six departures | Day trips once you are in town |
Two notes on the numbers. The taxi estimates apply Lähitaksi's published tariff to a 10 km ride of about 15 minutes and a 3 km ride of about 5 minutes. Lähitaksi doesn't publish a fixed airport fare, and it says an agreed fixed price is available in its app, so the real number may differ. Prices include 13.5% VAT. Lähitaksi's group rate for five to eight people is higher (€12.40 start, €2.05 per km).
Santa's Express tickets are listed on airportbus.fi: €7 for an adult two-way, €2 for a child one-way and €3 for a child two-way. The children's product title says 4-12 years while its web address says 0-12, so check with the operator if your child is under four.
When does the Santa's Express actually run in winter 2026-27?
Daily, every day of the week, between 19 October 2026 and 31 March 2027, with extra departures from 1 November to 14 March and a late run in December and January. All of that comes from the operator's printed timetable. It lists the airport stop times below.
| Period | First airport stop | Last airport stop | Departures from the railway station |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19-31 Oct 2026, 15-31 Mar 2027 | 08:05 | 17:30 | 10 a day (the 11:15 run ends at the village) |
| 1 Nov 2026 - 14 Mar 2027 | 08:05 | 18:05 | 19 a day |
| 1 Dec 2026 - 31 Jan 2027 | 08:05 | 19:10 | 20 a day |
The Santa Park stop starts on 31 October 2026. Two departures, from the railway station at 11:15 and 12:35, end at Santa Claus Village instead of the airport, so don't assume every bus reaches the terminal. Outside the 1 November to 14 March extras, the airport stop has no bus between 10:55 and 13:40, so a midday landing is the worst time to arrive without a plan.
The sample journey times, from the printed table: the railway station to the airport takes 35 minutes, Aallonkatu to the airport 25 minutes and the village to the airport five. Those are the times for the city-to-airport direction, and the return should be similar, but the operator doesn't print it.
What if you land late or the bus isn't running?
Take a taxi. Two operators advertise round-the-clock service, and three have platforms outside the terminal. The last Santa's Express call at the airport is 17:30, 18:05 or 19:10 depending on the date, and Airport Express states 9:00-21:00, so anything landing after about 19:00 should plan on a car.
A few practical steps help:
- Pre-book. Lähitaksi says the advance booking fee is removed in Rovaniemi and that a standard taxi can be booked up to 30 minutes ahead. A minivan needs at least an hour, and the day before is better. Menevä also says prebooking is free.
- Put your arrival time and flight number in the booking. Finavia says taxis wait at the platforms during scheduled arrival times, and Lähitaksi's own form asks for your arrival time.
- Check the price before you confirm. Menevä shows the final price per vehicle type when you book online, and Lähitaksi says you can agree a fixed fare in its app.
- Keep the hotel's address and phone number handy. Late check-in often means calling ahead anyway.
- Carry a card. The Airport Express bus won't accept cash.
Ride-hailing apps appear in some guides. We could not verify any operator's winter service from a primary source, so we are leaving them out.
What changes around Christmas and New Year?
The Santa's Express timetable has no holiday exceptions, and its late departure runs from 1 December to 31 January. That's reassuring but not a promise. The operator's pages say nothing specific about 24-26 December, so confirm before you rely on a bus that week.
Other details we can verify. The 8C school-day extras for bus 8 run 19 October to 23 December 2026 and from 7 January to 5 March 2027, which means they are off during the Christmas break. Visit Rovaniemi's public transport page also warns that public holidays can change local bus connections, and the bus 8 timetable prints a separate return route for weekends and holidays. The taxi and rental picture matters more in this period. Winter is the busy season, so booking the taxi or private transfer ahead is safer than relying on the rank.
If you plan to see Santa Claus Village around 24 December, read the Rovaniemi destination guide and book accommodation first. This guide covers only the trip from the terminal.
Should you rent a car at Rovaniemi Airport?
Only if you are leaving town or staying outside it. Finavia lists twelve rental brands for the airport, including Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Enterprise and Finn-Rent, and notes that some open only with a prior reservation. Check each company's website for hours.
Visit Rovaniemi's car-rental page lists Car Rental Rovaniemi, whose listing says studded winter tyres, extra driving lights and unlimited kilometres are always included and that you can pick the car up day or night. Its listing runs for January to April, November and December.
Costs beyond the rental: city-centre parking is €2 per hour, paid at ticket machines, but those tickets are not valid at the airport or railway station, according to Visit Rovaniemi. Winter roads here are a different skill from a UK or US commute, so allow time and read the Northern Lights guide before you plan late-night drives to dark spots. If your plan is a few nights between the airport, the village and the centre, a rental car is the most expensive way to solve a problem that a bus ticket handles.
How do you reach your hotel, Santa Park or a resort?
Match your hotel to a bus stop. Central hotels sit near the Santa's Express stops at the railway station, bus station, Rinteenkulma, Aallonkatu and Toripuistikko. Village hotels use the Santa Claus Village stop. Santa Park has its own stop from 31 October 2026. Anything else needs a taxi or hotel shuttle.
Some hotels run their own shuttles. Santa Claus Village's getting-here page says the Apukka Shuttle Bus runs between the city centre, the village and Apukka in autumn and winter. We have not verified shuttle schedules for other hotels, so ask yours when you book whether it collects from the airport or only from the village.
For other Lapland resorts, Finavia says a direct connection to Pyhä-Luosto runs four times a day in winter and twice a day in summer, with timetables on Pyhä.fi. Santa Claus Taxi, linked from the airportbus.fi menu, publishes starting prices from the airport of €190 to Ranua, €235 to Luosto and €350 to Levi, but says the final price depends on season, group size and time. Splitting one vehicle between four or more people is the usual way to make a long transfer affordable.
Which transfer should you choose?
For a first visit to Rovaniemi, pick by arrival time. Land before about 17:00 and travel light: the bus. Land after dark, with children or in a December rush: a pre-booked taxi or the €55 private transfer. Stay outside town or plan to drive: rent a car.
Our verdict, with the reasoning shown:
- Arriving 08:00-17:00 on a budget: Santa's Express or Airport Express. €7-8 is a fifth of a taxi to the centre, and the stops reach most central hotels.
- Arriving after 19:00: a taxi. Nothing else is guaranteed.
- Family of four with luggage and a child seat: a taxi, plus the €10.50 child-seat fee Lähitaksi lists. Four people split the fare, and a pre-booked car removes the stop-and-start of a bus.
- Santa Claus Village first, hotel second: the bus to the village, as it is the shortest ride, and the taxi onward if you are staying at the other end of town.
- Aurora-first trip with a hire car: rent it for the days you need it, not the whole stay, because city parking costs €2 an hour.
What is overrated: waiting at the terminal for "the" public bus. The sources we checked list no city bus to the airport, only private operators with printed timetables. What is underrated: the taxi to the village. It's about 3 km, so the metered fare is small.
Practical checklist before you fly
- Open the Airport Express timetable page and save the image. Check that it still says "valid 19.10.2026-31.3.2027".
- Email the operator for your exact landing time and the return leg from the airport.
- Decide on a taxi backup and pre-book it if you land after 17:00.
- Bring a payment card. The bus doesn't take cash.
- Check Rovaniemi's seasonal pages for your travel month and the Rovaniemi destination guide for neighbourhood context.
- Recheck every price and timetable here by 1 December 2026, and again before 31 March 2027.
Fares and timetables change. Everything above was read from the operators' pages on 25 October 2026, and the source list sits with this article in our knowledge base. Where a page was silent, we've said so rather than guessing.
