Most "how to get there" pages pick one route and sell it. This one lays out the whole decision: where you start, what the direct flights actually are this winter, and what each Helsinki-to-Lapland option costs you in hours. Schedules and prices were checked against airline, airport, rail and coach pages on 26 October 2026. They change, so the sections below say when to recheck.
Where in Lapland are you actually going?
Pick your destination before your route. Rovaniemi is the easy first base, and the rest of Finnish Lapland is a long way further north. Our guide to where Lapland is has the map and distances. The short version is that your final stop decides your airport more than your home city does.
Finnish Lapland has five airports with scheduled service. Finavia, which runs them, lists these winter 2026-27 route counts: Rovaniemi 37, Kittilä 15, Kuusamo 9, Ivalo 8 and Kemi-Tornio 2. Rovaniemi suits Santa and city stays, Kittilä serves Levi and Ylläs, and Ivalo serves Saariselkä and Inari. Our Lapland airports guide matches each resort to its airport, so this article doesn't repeat that table. Everything below uses Rovaniemi as the example because it has the most routes.
Can you fly direct to Lapland this winter?
Yes, from many European cities. Finavia's route listing for the international winter season (25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027) names more than 35 cities served from Rovaniemi, including 11 UK airports plus Dublin, Shannon, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Paris. Dates and weekdays vary by airline, and most end in early January.
Finavia's own counts differ slightly between its pages: 37 routes at Rovaniemi, direct connections to 36 airports at peak. Visit Rovaniemi shows 47 flight routes, which appears to be a different way of counting. Don't read the gap as an error.
For UK departures, Visit Rovaniemi's winter listing shows how patchy "direct" really is:
| From | Airline and days (winter 2026-27) | Season on the listing |
|---|---|---|
| London Stansted | Ryanair, daily | 25 Oct to 27 Mar |
| London Gatwick | British Airways, Mon and Fri | 4 Dec to 4 Jan |
| London Gatwick | easyJet, "several connections a week" | 11 Nov to 24 Mar |
| London Luton | easyJet, Tue and Sat (also Thu to 2 Jan) | 24 Nov to 20 Feb |
| Manchester | easyJet five days a week; Ryanair Mon and Sat | to 5 Jan; to 27 Mar |
| Edinburgh | easyJet, Wed and Sun | 25 Nov to 3 Jan |
| Birmingham | Ryanair Mon and Sat; easyJet Wed and Sun | to 27 Mar; to 3 Jan |
| Dublin | Ryanair, Mon, Wed, Thu, Sat, Sun | 25 Oct to 27 Mar |
| Shannon | Ryanair, Mon, Thu, Sat | late Oct to late Mar |
Source: Visit Rovaniemi flight listing, checked 26 October 2026. Bristol, Liverpool, Southend and Belfast are also listed; I've left them out to keep the table short.
Two cautions. First, a direct flight on Tuesdays and Saturdays only fixes your trip to a Saturday-to-Saturday or Tuesday-to-Tuesday shape, and that matters more than the fare. Second, airlines change these listings, so treat the table as a map of what exists rather than a timetable.
Direct flights also leave Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Spain for Rovaniemi, and Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo have their own direct lists in Finavia's route listing. The page itself says it excludes charters and some summer routes, and carries a verification date of October 2025, so confirm against the airline.
How long is the flight to Lapland?
From Helsinki to Rovaniemi it is 1 h 15 min to 1 h 55 min, according to Finnair's Rovaniemi page. For direct UK flights, no airline page I could open states a Rovaniemi duration. British Airways' 2024 timetable for Gatwick to Ivalo (08:35 departure, 14:30 arrival local) implies about four hours once you allow for Finland being two hours ahead. Treat that as a guide, not a published figure. Routes, airlines and days of operation are in our flights to Rovaniemi guide.
From North America the long leg is the one to Helsinki. Finnair's New York page says non-stop flights take "a little over 8 hours" and run most days. Its Chicago page gives around 8 h 45 min, but lists the route for October 2026 and March to October 2027 only, which suggests no Chicago service this winter. Finnair's Helsinki page lists direct routes from Atlanta, Nashville, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando, Miami, New York and Philadelphia. Seasons differ by city, so check the one you need.
I couldn't verify a Canadian winter route from a primary source. Finnair's page names Toronto only as a default departure city. Plan on connecting in the UK or elsewhere in Europe, or through a US gateway, and check Finnair for your dates.
Should you connect via Helsinki instead?
Connect via Helsinki when no direct flight serves your dates, you come from outside Europe, or you want a Lapland airport other than Rovaniemi. Finnair flies from Helsinki to Ivalo, Kemi, Kittilä, Kuusamo and Rovaniemi, and Norwegian also flies to Rovaniemi. Visit Rovaniemi lists Finnair as "several connections daily, year-round".
What you gain is flexibility: more departure days, more origin airports, one ticket. What you pay is time and one more place for things to go wrong. Finnair says a change at Helsinki can take "just 35 minutes" at best, because all gates sit along one walkway. That is the best case. On a single ticket your bags are checked through and the airline rebooks you if the first leg runs late. On two separate tickets neither of those protections applies, so leave a long buffer or don't do it.
What are the Helsinki-to-Lapland options?
There are five: fly, take the night train, take a day train, take the coach or drive. Flying takes 1 h 15 min to 1 h 55 min in the air. Trains take 8 to 12 hours. The coach averages about 11.5 hours. Driving is the most flexible and most demanding in winter.
| Option | Journey time | How often | Cost | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flight, Helsinki to Rovaniemi | 1 h 15 min to 1 h 55 min (Finnair) | Finnair several daily, Norwegian several weekly, year-round (Visit Rovaniemi) | Check the current fare on Finnair or Norwegian | Short trips, onward flights from abroad, any Lapland airport |
| Night train (Santa Claus Express) | 11 h 51 min on 18 and 23 Dec 2026, 19:29 to 07:20 | Three night departures from Helsinki on 18 Dec | Own cabin from €59 for the whole cabin; car space from €49 (VR night-train page) | Saving a hotel night, families, arriving in town at breakfast |
| Day train (InterCity) | 8 h 00 min to 9 h 38 min on 18 Dec 2026 | Four departures on 18 Dec, 05:03 to 14:20 | Check the current fare on VR | Daylight views, no overnight, flexible budgets |
| Coach | About 11.5 hours on average (Matkahuolto) | Check the Matkahuolto planner | Check the current price on Matkahuolto | Last resort when rail and air don't fit |
| Drive | Not published by an authority; allow a full day | Whenever you leave | Check rental and fuel costs with your provider | Onward trips to Levi, Inari or Ruka with luggage |
Train times come from the timetable data that Fintraffic publishes for VR's trains, checked 26 October 2026, for 18 December 2026. A different date can differ by a few minutes, and VR's own long-distance PDF is valid from 10 August to 12 December 2026, with a new one after that. Prices are shown only where the operator's page presents them as current.
Is the Santa Claus Express worth taking?
For many visitors, yes. The night train replaces a hotel night, delivers you to Rovaniemi at 07:20 and is VR's brand for the service from Helsinki or Turku. VR says you can book a seat or a private sleeper cabin, and cars can come along on the same train.
On 18 December 2026, train 265 leaves Helsinki at 19:29, calls at Tampere (arrive 22:31, depart 23:09), Oulu (04:44) and Kemi (05:58), and reaches Rovaniemi at 07:20. Two more night trains leave at 21:19 (arrive 09:58, 12 h 39 min) and 23:04 (arrive 10:58, 11 h 54 min). Heading south, train 266 leaves Rovaniemi on 23 December at 17:52 and reaches Helsinki at 06:27 on Christmas Eve.
From VR's night train page, the practical points are:
- Night trains run to Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi. Kolari is the rail stop for Levi and Ylläs, with a shuttle onward.
- Cabins are booked whole, not by berth. Bedding is provided. Bring your own drinking water, because the train water isn't drinkable.
- Upstairs cabins have a private shower and toilet. Lower cabins use a shower in the corridor.
- VR's page shows tickets on sale until 10 October 2027.
My view: the night train suits a Rovaniemi-only plan with a day or two of slack, because it replaces a hotel night and puts you in town at 07:20. It is a poor fit if you have a flight home the morning after you return, since the southbound train arrives in Helsinki at 06:27 on some dates. Eleven hours is also long with young children, even in a private cabin. Cabin types, car spaces and door-to-door times are compared in our Helsinki to Rovaniemi train vs flight guide.
When does each route make sense?
Choose by trip length and origin, not by price alone. The table below converts the sourced times into door-to-door shapes. Check-in and transfer buffers are my arithmetic, not an operator figure, so adjust them to your own airport.
| Your situation | Likely shape | Why |
|---|---|---|
| UK or Ireland, Rovaniemi stay, a direct flight matches your dates | Direct flight, then airport bus or taxi | Fewest changes; see the airport transfer guide |
| UK or Ireland, no direct flight on your dates | Fly to Helsinki, then Finnair north | Daily departures, one ticket, bags checked through |
| US or Canada | Fly to Helsinki, then Rovaniemi by air or night train | Direct North America to Lapland flights are not listed |
| Continental Europe, Levi, Ylläs or Saariselkä | Direct to Kittilä or Ivalo if listed | Closer than Rovaniemi; see the airports guide |
| A week or more, want the journey as part of the trip | Fly to Helsinki, spend a night, take the night train | Arrive in Rovaniemi at 07:20 with a full day |
| Travelling with a car or large luggage | Night train with a car space, or fly and rent at the airport | VR sells car spaces on the night train |
| Short break, three to four days | Direct flight only | Train and coach time eats too much of the trip |
For a Levi or Ylläs stay, the rail route runs to Kolari, but flying to Kittilä is simpler; Levi and the other resort pages explain what the last leg looks like. Rovaniemi itself is covered in the Rovaniemi destination guide.
Can you drive to Lapland in winter?
You can, and it suits some trips, but it is the least predictable way to arrive. Visit Rovaniemi says Rovaniemi is easy to reach by car from all directions and tells drivers to allow enough time for the distances and changing winter weather.
Visit Finland adds that snow tyres are required in winter, headlights must be on at all times, and drivers should watch for elk and reindeer, which are most active at dusk and dawn. In December that means a lot of dusk. I couldn't find an official Helsinki to Rovaniemi drive time, so I haven't published one; use a route planner for your own start point and add margin.
Driving makes most sense if you are already in Finland, are carrying a lot of gear, or are going on beyond Rovaniemi to places the train doesn't reach. For a first Lapland trip it rarely beats the night train with a car space. Our Rovaniemi transfers guide covers renting at the airport.
When should you book for the Christmas peak?
As early as your dates are fixed, and flights before everything else. No airline or operator publishes a safe lead time, so I won't invent one. What the primary sources do show is that capacity is added only for specific weeks and that early purchase is rewarded.
Visit Rovaniemi lists extra Christmas-week flights between 21 December 2026 and 3 January 2027: Ryanair adds Milan Bergamo daily and Birmingham on Wednesdays, Dublin gets an extra Tuesday, Iberia's Madrid flight runs daily and SAS Copenhagen runs daily until 5 January. Many other routes stop in early January, so a late return can leave you few options.
Finavia expects Lapland passenger numbers to grow 5 to 10 percent this winter and says Rovaniemi and Kittilä have been under slot coordination since winter 2025-26, which means a fixed number of arrival and departure slots. Matkahuolto says "the earlier you buy your ticket, the more you save", and VR says single long-distance ticket prices change with purchase and travel dates. Both are general rules, not a Christmas guarantee.
Order of booking: flights or sleeper cabin first, then hotel, then activities. If Christmas week is out of reach, our Christmas in Lapland guide covers the alternatives, and the trip cost guide shows where transport sits in a budget.
What is the best way to plan the journey?
Work through the decision in this order and stop at the first answer that fits.
- Choose your base. Rovaniemi for Santa and a city stay, Kittilä for Levi, Ivalo for Saariselkä. See the airports guide.
- Check whether a direct flight serves your dates from your home airport on the airline's own site. If so, take it.
- If not, find a flight to Helsinki and add a Finnair flight north on the same ticket.
- Consider the night train if you can spare the time and want to save a hotel night.
- Book your airport transfer or car, using the transfers guide.
- Recheck every schedule before you pay. This article's flight and train data are good until the winter season ends on 27 March 2027 and need rechecking before reuse.
