Is March a good time to visit Lapland?

For most first winter trips, yes. March keeps the deep snow of midwinter, gives you nearly five times December's sun, and still leaves dark evenings for aurora. The costs are a thinner dark window, bright afternoons, and a busy Easter weekend in 2027.

Our best time to visit Lapland guide ranks late February to mid-March first for an average first-timer. This page zooms into March itself and compares it with its neighbours. All figures are for Rovaniemi unless stated, and the hotel numbers come from Statistics Finland for 2026, which may still be revised.

My verdict: pick March over February if you can handle -2 °C afternoons and want more than eight hours of light. Pick February if you want the hardest cold and the longest nights.

How cold is Lapland in March, and how much snow is there?

March in Rovaniemi averages -5.6 °C, with typical daily highs of -1.9 °C and lows of -9.1 °C. Snow is at or near its yearly maximum: the median depth is 77 cm on 15 March and 75 cm on 31 March. It is cold, but a different cold from January.

The temperatures below are the Finnish Meteorological Institute's 1991-2020 normals. The snow figures are FMI's median depths from the same reference period.

StationMarch meanDaily high / lowSnow 15 MarSnow 31 Mar

Kuusamo Kiutaköngäs (Ruka area)-6.9 °C-1.3 / -13.5 °C68 cm68 cm

FMI's snow page says in Finnish (my translation) that snow cover is usually thickest towards spring, in mid-March, and in Lapland often only in early April. So March is not a thin-snow month. Pokka is a cold inland site, so Levi itself is probably milder; that is my inference, not an FMI statement.

Normals hide the spread. Rovaniemi's March mean was -3.5 °C in 2025 and -0.5 °C in 2026, against the normal -5.6 °C. Even so, FMI's national record low for March is -44.3 °C (Salla, 1971), which is a ceiling and not a plan. Our winter weather guide has the full table, and the what-to-wear guide covers layers. March mornings need the same kit as February; afternoons are where you shed a layer.

How much daylight does Lapland get in March?

Rovaniemi's sun is up for 9 hours 55 minutes on 1 March and 13 hours 5 minutes on 27 March. The equinox arrives on 20 March 2027 at 22:25 Finnish time, when day and night are roughly equal. Daylight grows by about 7 minutes a day through the month.

I took these times from the US Naval Observatory for Rovaniemi (66.50° N, 25.73° E). The Observatory counts sunrise and sunset at the upper edge of the Sun.

Finland moves to summer time on the last Sunday of March, according to the University of Helsinki's Almanac Office, at 03:00 to 04:00. In 2027 that is 28 March. Sunrise and sunset both jump an hour later overnight, so the first week of April feels very different from the second week of March. Flight timetables change then as well. Finavia says the international winter season ends on 27 March 2027, so check late-March routes separately.

The practical upshot: in early March daylight ends around 17:30, while at the end of the month the sun is up past 18:30 even before the clocks change.

Can you see the Northern Lights in Lapland in March?

Yes, and March is the month FMI singles out. It says that, with weather taken into account, the best time for auroras in Northern Finland is March and early April. The catch is that the sky is no longer dark for 12 hours, so you need to choose your nights.

FMI's aurora page gives two useful numbers. On a dark and cloudless night, the chance of seeing an aurora is roughly 50% in Lapland ski resorts such as Ylläs, Levi and Saariselkä, and about 75% at Kilpisjärvi. FMI also says the rate is "slightly higher during spring and autumn than during winter and summer", and that displays are most typical around midnight. Those are probabilities for a clear night, not for any night.

Our Northern Lights timing guide calculates about 6 hours of full astronomical darkness in Rovaniemi on 15 March, against about 13 hours in December. Civil twilight on 15 March ends at 19:08, and after the clock change it ends an hour later, so the real viewing window starts late. The moon matters at the margin: the USNO has the new moon on 8 March 2027 and the full moon on 22 March. A week around 8 March is the darker choice.

Two planning rules follow. Stay at least three nights, and book daytime activities for the afternoons so you can stay up. For how to read cloud and aurora forecasts once you are there, see the aurora forecast guide. For viewing spots near the city, see Northern Lights in Rovaniemi.

What can you do in Lapland in March?

March suits skiing, long outdoor days and ski touring, with the snow firm enough to cover real distance. Resorts are open into spring, and at least one major resort publishes events for the month. Daylight is the main change from midwinter.

Downhill skiing. Levi says its ski season lasts until early May, with some slopes closing in mid-April. March is therefore the safe middle of the season. Levi's events page lists the Lappi Cup Freeride on 14 March 2027, the Finnish alpine championships and FIS races on 1 to 4 April, and the Ylläs-Levi cross-country event on 2 to 3 April. These are Levi's own listings, read on 2 November 2026, and dates can move. For the resort, see our Levi page.

Cross-country and touring. Luontoon says the snow is soft through winter "till March" and usually freezes in late March or early April, and that these conditions may last from mid-April until mid-May. In plain terms: March is the transition, and the best crust skiing comes just after it.

Everything else. Husky, reindeer and snowmobile operators run through the winter, but I have not found a primary-source calendar that says which operators stop in March, and I have not tested any of them. Ask each operator for its 2027 season dates before you book. Use the Lapland itinerary guide to decide how many nights a base needs.

One thing I would not plan: a long daytime schedule that ends with a late aurora night, every day for a week. The light tempts you into doing both, and tiredness makes the second half of the week poor.

Do you need sunglasses in Lapland in March?

Yes. Snow reflects UV light up into your face, and March brings strong sun to a white landscape. Pack UV-filtering sunglasses, and goggles if you ski or ride a snowmobile.

FMI's UV protection page says that fresh snow can reflect more than 90% of UV radiation. Its ultraviolet radiation page says too much short-term exposure can cause snow blindness, "painful but fortunately temporary", and recommends a wide-brimmed hat and high-quality sunglasses that also block radiation entering from the sides. FMI's UV questions page adds that thin cloud over a snow field is a hard combination, because you get direct and diffuse radiation, both reflected from the snow.

Do not assume the cold means no sunburn. Put sunscreen on your nose, cheeks and chin if you are out for hours, and lip balm in your pocket. I could not verify a UV index for March in Lapland, so I give no number.

How busy is Lapland in March, and what about Easter 2027?

March is busy but calmer than Christmas and February. Statistics Finland's 2026 hotel occupancy for Rovaniemi was 92.5% in February and 68.5% in March, and for Kittilä 89.6% and 77.3%. Easter 2027 falls entirely in March, so the last weekend deserves early booking.

Hotels, 2026RovaniemiKittilä (Levi)Inari
February occupancy / average room92.5% / about €32489.6% / about €27178.5% / about €194
March occupancy / average room68.5% / about €26277.3% / about €25668.1% / about €198
April occupancy / average room33.2% / about €13253.1% / about €15730.8% / about €142

These are past hotel averages, not quotes, and they cover hotels only, not cabins, igloos or packages. Inari's March 2026 average rose to about €198 from about €174 in 2025, so do not assume March is cheap. Compare real prices from the operator for your dates. For budgets see the trip cost guide, and for choosing a base the where to stay guide.

Easter 2027. Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, which makes Good Friday 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March. I derived this from the Almanac Office's rule that Easter is the Sunday after the first full moon after 21 March, and the USNO's full moon on 22 March. Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are all public holidays in Finland. Do monthly hotel figures show an Easter bump? Not clearly: Rovaniemi's March occupancy was 79.3% in 2024, when Easter was 31 March, and 79.0% in 2025, when Easter was 20 April. One busy weekend can hide inside a monthly average, though, so I would not rely on that.

Finnish school holidays. The Finnish National Agency for Education lists winter breaks in 2027 as 22 February to 12 March, staggered by town. Its list is indicative, but it puts Rovaniemi's break on 8 to 12 March. I have no data on how many domestic guests that brings, so I note it and leave the inference to you. For UK school holidays and Easter breaks, check your own council's term dates, because they differ by area.

March, February or April: which should you pick?

Pick late February to mid-March for the best mix of snow, light and aurora, and early April if you want the cheapest hotel rooms and can accept thinner snow. Pick February for the hardest winter, and avoid the Easter weekend if you want peace.

April is the trade, not the upgrade: FMI's median snow depth in Rovaniemi falls from 64 cm on 15 April to 27 cm on 30 April, and the monthly mean is just above freezing. The aurora season is also nearly over. The pillar guide linked above covers that decision in detail.

What is a practical plan for March 2027?

Choose your week by what matters most, book flights and a base first, and leave afternoons free. If aurora is the priority, anchor the trip around 8 March. If skiing is, aim for mid to late March, but check the Easter weekend.

  1. Pick the week. Early March for aurora and cold, mid-March for balance, late March for light and skiing. Check your council's holiday dates.
  2. Book transport first. Finavia's winter flight season ends 27 March 2027; for Easter weekend trips, check airline schedules carefully.
  3. Pick a base. Rovaniemi suits short trips, Levi suits skiing, and Saariselkä or Inari suit quiet aurora nights. See where to stay.
  4. Pack for nights around -9 °C or colder on clear ones, and afternoons near -2 °C. Layers, mittens, a hat, UV sunglasses and sunscreen.
  5. Plan three or more nights and keep one evening free as a weather buffer.
  6. Check the forecast a few days out. March can be warmer or colder than the normals.
