What is Lapland like in November?

November is the month winter arrives, not the month it is established. Temperatures sit a few degrees below freezing, daylight shrinks by almost four hours between the first and last day, and snow is patchy at first. Santa is open, the first ski slopes are running, and prices are well below December.

The month changes fast enough that "November" is really two trips. The table compares the start and end of the month in Rovaniemi. Daylight comes from the US Naval Observatory for 2026, with a flat horizon. Snow and temperature come from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

Our verdict: the first half of November is a Santa-and-lights trip with a chance of snow, and the second half is the start of the real winter programme. If you are comparing it with other months, the best time to visit Lapland guide ranks them all by traveller type. Late February to mid-March still wins for a first winter trip, and November is the budget-friendly alternative.

Is there snow in Lapland in November?

Usually some, rarely a lot. FMI's median snow depth on 15 November is 9 cm at Rovaniemi airport, 16 cm at Kilpisjärvi, and 20 cm at both Saariselkä and Kittilä Pokka. A median means half of years have less, so plan as if the ground could be bare.

FMI's 1991-2020 dates for the first lasting snow cover are 9 October at Kittilä Pokka, 10 October at Utsjoki Kevo, 18 October at Sodankylä, 19 October at Kuusamo Kiutaköngäs and 21 October at Rovaniemi Apukka. The latest on record at Apukka is 19 November (2011). So in a typical year the snow is already down by the first day of November, and in a late year it arrives mid-month.

Visit Rovaniemi puts it in terms a visitor can use: snow typically begins to fall in November, but the first snowfall can arrive as early as October or as late as December. Luontoon.fi says permanent snow cover "usually forms in late November and sometimes only in December", and that conditions are typically too challenging for both skiing and walking in November. For a full snow table by month, see our Lapland winter weather guide.

The honest answer to "will there be snow on my dates" is that nobody can promise it. Check the forecast a week out and ask your accommodation about the ground, not the long-term average.

How cold is Lapland in November, and how short are the days?

Cold but not extreme. FMI's 1991-2020 November mean is -4.4 °C at Rovaniemi airport and -7.0 °C at Kittilä Pokka. Days lose about 3 hours 40 minutes of sun in Rovaniemi across the month, and the far north loses the sun altogether before it ends.

FMI 1991-2020, NovemberMeanMean daily low
Rovaniemi airport-4.4 °C-6.7 °C
Ivalo airport (Inari)-5.7 °C-9.3 °C
Kittilä Pokka-7.0 °Cnot listed here
Saariselkä-6.7 °Cnot listed here
Kilpisjärvi-6.5 °Cnot listed here

Year-to-year swings are large. Rovaniemi averaged -3.3 °C in November 2024 and -6.2 °C in November 2025, a difference of almost 3 degrees. Pack for the colder end, which our what to wear in Lapland guide covers by activity. The short version for November is a full three-layer system, insulated boots, a hat and mittens.

Daylight is the real November story. This is the same calculation for Inari village, with Rovaniemi again for comparison:

Sun up (hours, minutes)1 Nov8 Nov15 Nov22 Nov30 Nov
Rovaniemi7 h 306 h 365 h 434 h 503 h 52
Inari6 h 485 h 444 h 343 h 171 h 14

Polar night, when the sun doesn't rise at all, arrives at the very end. My USNO-based calculation for winter 2026-27, the same one as in our weather guide, puts the first sunless day at 25 November in Nuorgam and 26 November in Utsjoki; Inari village follows on 2 December and Saariselkä on 6 December. Finavia says polar night starts at the end of November and that "there is twilight at noon". Rovaniemi has no polar night at all.

Can you see the Northern Lights in Lapland in November?

Yes, and it is statistically one of the better months. Visit Finland says October and November are "statistically among the strongest months for aurora activity". Nights are long, and the snow doesn't have to be deep for the sky to work.

FMI gives the probability on a dark and cloudless night as roughly 50% at Lapland resorts such as Ylläs, Levi and Saariselkä. It says displays are most typical around midnight and a couple of hours either side. The catch is in the word "cloudless". I couldn't find a primary-source cloud statistic by month, so I won't quote one. Expect November to be greyer than February.

The moon matters at the margin. In 2026 the new moon falls on 9 November and the full moon on 24 November (US Naval Observatory), so the first half of the month is darker. Full darkness lasts about 12 hours by mid-November, according to the calculation in our Northern Lights timing guide. For Rovaniemi viewing spots, see the Rovaniemi aurora guide, and for the overview start with the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland pillar.

What is open in Lapland in November?

Santa, SantaPark and the first ski slopes are open, and the Christmas season begins quietly. Winter-only attractions such as Snowman World wait until December. Opening dates below were checked on 2 November 2026 and can change.

For visitor detail, our guides to Santa Claus Village and SantaPark cover tickets, queues and what to skip. The main Christmas events in Rovaniemi sit mostly in December: Visit Rovaniemi lists the traditional Christmas Market for 5 and 6 December and "Santa Claus is on His Way" on 23 December. The one November date on that list is 7 November. If the festive build-up is what you came for, the Christmas in Lapland guide shows how the weeks compare.

Skiing is the surprise. Levi says its season began on 2 October at the Front Slopes "with preserved snow", which means snow stored from last winter rather than fresh. Saariselkä does the opposite: it doesn't store snow, and builds its first track only when frost lasts. A November ski trip is a narrow strip of slope, so check the resort's live slope status, and see our skiing page and the Levi hub for the rest.

Which activities run if the snow is thin?

Husky and snowmobile rides run in November only where operators have a plan for thin snow, and many wait until 30 November. Ask which dates, what surface, and what happens if it melts. A ride on a cart is not the same product as a ride on a sled.

Two operator pages show how it works in 2026:

  • Apukka Resort in Rovaniemi runs November packages from 9 to 30 November 2026. The resort says "starting from November 10, we will offer early winter experiences on stored and cannoned snow if the natural snow isn't sticking around". The packages list a 2-hour Early Winter Snowmobile Safari and a 3 km Early Winter Husky Sled Ride.
  • Bearhill Husky in Rovaniemi lists, on its winter tours page, the Born to Run Tour, a self-driven 4 km cart or sled ride, from 12 October to 29 November 2026, and "Running with the Pack" from 16 November. Most of its sled tours, and Santa's Husky Rides at Santa Claus Village, start on 30 November. As checked on 2 November 2026 the page shows "starting from" prices of €169 for Born to Run and €164 for Running with the Pack.

I haven't tested either operator, and this is what their own pages say. Other operators will differ, so treat the dates above as examples of the pattern: a cart-based or early-snow product in November, then the full programme from the end of the month. Husky safaris are covered in more detail on our husky safari page.

What doesn't depend on snow: Santa, SantaPark, saunas, museums, restaurants and aurora hunting. What mostly doesn't work: hiking. Luontoon.fi lists November as part of the inaccessible period for Pallas-Yllästunturi, Utsjoki and Urho Kekkonen national parks, so leave backcountry hiking for another month.

How busy and expensive is Lapland in November?

Rovaniemi is not quiet in November, but the north is. Statistics Finland shows Rovaniemi hotels 78.7% occupied in November 2025 at an average of about €262 a room, against 93.5% and about €482 in December.

The table is hotels only, in 2025, and it is history, not a quote. Cabins, igloos and packages aren't counted.

2025 hotel averageNovemberDecember
Rovaniemi79%, about €26294%, about €482
Kittilä (Levi)40%, about €17489%, about €287
Inari32%, about €13676%, about €187
Kuusamo (Ruka)42%, about €15279%, about €167

Rovaniemi's November 2024 occupancy was higher still, at 82.4%, so the city's Santa market already runs strongly before December. And in Rovaniemi, 72,038 of 86,874 hotel nights in November 2025 were foreign guests, about 83%, so it is an international month. The same statistics put Rovaniemi's November room average roughly 46% below December. Kittilä's sits about 39% below.

My reading: the saving is real, and it comes with fewer activities, so it suits trips built on town, Santa and sauna. For budgets by category see the Lapland trip cost guide.

Is early or late November better?

Early November is quieter and cheaper, and late November has less daylight but a more complete programme. Choose the first week for stored-snow skiing and calm Santa visits. Choose 23 to 30 November for a better snow chance, longer village hours and husky seasons starting.

If you can only go in November and snow matters, aim for the last days and hope. If you want snow and activities with fewer worries, the days after 30 November are the cheapest way to get them, and the Christmas guide covers 1 to 15 December.

Who is Lapland in November for?

It suits families who want Santa with shorter queues, aurora hunters who can live with grey weather, and anyone after a winter feel at lower prices. It doesn't suit anyone who has paid for a snow-based programme and expects deep powder.

  • Families with young children: good. Santa and SantaPark are fully open, and village hours are shorter than December's. Our children guide covers pacing.
  • Aurora hunters: good, with a flexible plan. Choose a base where you can wait out cloud.
  • Budget-minded couples: good. The Rovaniemi hotel average runs about 46% below December in 2025 history.
  • Skiers: only for the opening weeks, and expect a few slopes.
  • Hikers: no. Wait until late February or summer.
  • Anyone who wants a picture-book winter: not guaranteed. January to March is the dependable window.

How do you plan a November trip?

Pick your priority and your dates, then check the thing that varies most, which is snow. Book a base with flexible cancellation, buy snow-dependent activities last, and keep a second plan that doesn't need snow.

  1. Choose the half of the month from the table above.
  2. Choose a base. Rovaniemi for Santa and the airport, Levi, Ruka or Ylläs for skiing, Inari or Saariselkä for aurora and fewer people. The where to stay guide compares them.
  3. Check operator dates and surface for any husky or snowmobile ride.
  4. Pack the three-layer system and a head torch. On 30 November civil twilight ends at 15:29.
  5. Keep one flexible evening for the aurora.

Facts here were checked on 2 November 2026. Opening dates and operator offers change, so recheck them before you book. The Rovaniemi hub has the place itself.
