What is Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi?
Santa Claus Village is a cluster of shops, restaurants, Santa's office, a post office and winter attractions on the Arctic Circle, about 8 km north of Rovaniemi. Nobody lives there. It's a commercial tourist complex, and for many families it's the reason they picked Rovaniemi at all.
The address is Tähtikuja 1, 96930 Napapiiri (Arctic Circle), and the official village site says it is open every day of the year. The free core is simple: you can walk around, cross the Arctic Circle line in the central square and join the queue for Santa. Separate businesses run nearly everything else, each with its own hours and prices.
So there's no village ticket, no gate and no village opening time. If you read that it's "open 24 hours", that's true of the grounds and the petrol station, not of Santa. The hours below are the operators' own.
For the wider town, see our Rovaniemi destination guide.
What is free and what costs money at Santa Claus Village?
Entering the village, meeting Santa and crossing the Arctic Circle line are free. Photos of your Santa meeting, Snowman World, rides, food and shopping cost extra. This table lists everything with a price we could verify from an operator or Visit Rovaniemi on 25 October 2026.

What are the Santa Claus Village opening hours in winter 2026-27?
The village is open daily, but businesses keep their own hours. Santa Claus Office runs 08:00-20:00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, then 09:00-18:00 until 31 March. Hours stretch in stages from late October, so mid-November is a shorter day than mid-December.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day differ. The village lists Iittala as closed on both days, and Santa's Pets closes at 15:00 on 24 December. Check each listing for those dates. All of this is a snapshot from 25 October 2026, and operators can change hours.
How does meeting Santa at Santa Claus Office work?
The regular Santa meeting is free and needs no advance booking. On the busiest days, collect a free Entrance Time slip early, then return to join the indoor queue at that time. The slip is not your meeting appointment; the office recommends allowing about an hour inside during its busiest season.
The office's FAQ says to collect your Entrance Time from the elves at the small red cabin near the entrance. In December, available times can run out during the day, sometimes after midday. The approximate one-hour indoor allowance is planning guidance, not a guaranteed maximum wait. Leave room in your plans after your entry time.
One rule catches parents out. Personal photography and recording aren't allowed during the meeting. The office's photographer elves take the pictures, you look at them afterwards, and you decide whether to buy. Prices are in the table above (from EUR 57 for downloads, up to five people). Older guides quote lower figures, so recheck before you go.
The office also sells a Christmas Express Pass. Its published price, checked on 25 October 2026, is EUR 500 per family of up to eight people. It includes a reserved meeting without the regular queue, digital photos and video. The office describes approximately ten minutes in total, including around five minutes with Santa, in Finnish or English. Check availability before planning around it.
Santa meetings elsewhere in Lapland are separate paid products. Visit Rovaniemi lists several with "starting from" prices. We'll compare the formats in a dedicated guide. Here, the village queue is the free, simple default.
What else is there to do besides meeting Santa?
Besides Santa, the village has the Arctic Circle line, Santa Claus' Main Post Office, Snowman World, snowtubing, husky and reindeer rides, a SnowHotel visit, shops and restaurants. Some of it is free. Check the operator's page for any price before you commit.
The village's activity pages say the Arctic Circle line is marked in the central square, and you can cross it for free, however you like. Arctic Circle Tourist Information sells certificates, which it calls "original Arctic Circle Crossing Certificates". It's a photo stop that takes minutes.
Santa Claus' Main Post Office is run by Posti. It sells stamps, postcards and gifts, lets you order a letter from Santa, and uses the Arctic Circle postmark, which Posti says is available only at the Arctic Circle. Cards and parcels left with the elves are sent just before Christmas. Posti's hours are in the table above; the village's own page lists November as 10-19, but Posti's own page says 10-18, so go by Posti.
Snowman World, per Visit Rovaniemi, has ice and snow slides, a skating rink with skates included, an ice disco and snow sculptures. Tickets start from EUR 35, and it opens on 6 December 2026, weather permitting. Santa's Snowtubing is new and opens on 3 December. Husky rides run daily from 30 November and the reindeer is open daily from 5 October. For a longer session with animals away from the village, see our guides to a husky safari and a reindeer farm visit.
Restaurants range from pizza and burgers to dinner places, and Marimekko, Pentik and Iittala have shops. Many stay open into the evening in December.
How do you get to Santa Claus Village from Rovaniemi centre and the airport?
Take local bus 8 from the railway station and city centre: it reaches the village in about 35 minutes. The Airport Express and Santa's Express bus also serves the village and the railway station. The village is 8 km from the centre and about 3 km from the airport.
The winter 2026-27 bus 8 timetable is valid from 12 August 2026 to 6 June 2027. On weekdays 18 buses leave the railway station between 05:50 and 19:00, and the first one is timed to reach the Arctic Circle at 06:25. At weekends there are six, from 11:15 to 17:30. Extra 8C trips run on school days from 19 October to 23 December 2026 and from 7 January to 5 March 2027. The timetable prints the outward times and the arrival back in the centre but not the departure time from the village, so check the last return bus on the current timetable before you settle in for the evening.
Bus 8 fares are in the cost table above. A 24-hour ticket costs EUR 9 for adults and EUR 4.50 for children, contactless card payment on the bus is EUR 3.60 per person, and strollers and prams travel free. A return trip by cash for one adult comes to EUR 7.20, or EUR 6.60 with the app.
Finavia says the Airport Express and Santa's Express takes you to the village and the railway station, tickets are sold on board, and timetables are at Airportbus.fi. The village says Santa's & Airport Express runs from November to March. We couldn't load the operator's fare page, so check price and times there.
For taxis, Visit Rovaniemi lists Lähitaksi, Menevä, Santa Line and Taksi Rovaniemi and advises asking the price before you get in. We have no verified fare, so we don't give one. The village's travel page lists Taksi Rovaniemi on +358 600 14000. We found no verified parking information, so check the village map PDF before driving in December.
When should you visit, and who should skip it?
Go in early November or between January and March for a calmer visit, and in December if snow attractions matter more than crowds. Santa Claus Office calls December its busiest month, and search interest for the village was many times higher in December 2025 than in summer.
That's a verdict, not a guarantee. Nobody publishes crowd counts, so the quieter advice below is our inference from the operators' statements and the opening dates.
| Your priority | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest crowds, simplest Santa visit | 24 Oct-29 Nov | Operator says December is busiest; Santa Claus Office is open 10-18 or 09-19, but Snowman World, snowtubing and the SnowHotel visit aren't open yet |
| Everything open, including Snowman World, snowtubing and huskies | December | Longest hours (Santa 08-20, post office 09-20), and also the busiest month. Go early in the day |
| Winter attractions without the Christmas rush | 4 Jan-31 Mar | Office 09-18, Snowman World until 17 Mar, snowtubing until 21 Mar, huskies until 4 Apr |
Who will love it: families with young children who want one clear, easy Santa moment, first-time visitors who want the Arctic Circle and a postmark, and anyone already in Rovaniemi. Who might not: people looking for quiet, wilderness or Sámi culture. It's a shop-and-queue destination, and December crowds come with it. For darker, calmer places, see our Northern Lights guide, and our pages on November and December in Lapland for the season more widely.
How long do you need?
Allow two to three hours for Santa, the post office, the Arctic Circle line and a meal. That's our planning estimate, not an operator figure. Add time if you plan Snowman World or an animal ride, and more in December when the queue for Santa can set the pace.
Practical checklist
- Check Santa Claus Office hours for your date: 08:00-20:00 from 30 November to 3 January.
- Decide about photos beforehand, since you can't take your own during the meeting.
- Take bus 8 out and check the last return bus on the current timetable. A taxi or the Airport Express are the other ways back.
- Dress warmly: the square, the Arctic Circle line, rides and bus stops are outdoors.
- Post cards early in December if you want them sent before Christmas.
- Recheck prices and hours on the operators' sites. Ours were taken on 25 October 2026.
