What is Kemi, and is it really Lapland?

Kemi is a port town of the Bothnian Bay, in Lapland by region but not by landscape. Finavia calls it a town that stands out in Lapland for its location by the sea, and Visit Kemi sells it as "Sea Lapland" with a seaside boulevard, an inner harbour and an archipelago (Visit Kemi).

Be clear about what that means. Kemi sits at about 65.7°N, south of the Arctic Circle (Visit Rovaniemi gives the circle at 66°33′46″N). There are no fells, no ski resorts and no polar night. What Kemi offers instead is one thing that no fell village can: a frozen sea you can sail across on an icebreaker.

It suits travellers who have already picked a main base and want one distinctive day, and families who like the idea of ice and ships. If you want huskies, skiing and wilderness cabins, base yourself elsewhere. Our Rovaniemi guide and where to stay in Lapland compare the options.

How do you get to Kemi?

Fly to Kemi-Tornio Airport, take a train, or come from Rovaniemi by road or shuttle. The airport is a 5-minute drive from Kemi and about 25 minutes from Tornio (Finavia). Finnair flies Helsinki to Kemi, and Finavia counts only two routes at Kemi-Tornio in winter 2026-27, so there is little choice of departure.

Train times come from Fintraffic open data for the dates shown; timetables change, so check VR before booking. There are no direct UK or Irish flights to Kemi-Tornio, per Finavia's winter route list. UK visitors usually connect via Helsinki or fly to Rovaniemi: see flights to Rovaniemi and Lapland airports.

What can you do in Kemi?

The headline act is the icebreaker cruise. Visit Kemi says two ships sail from the town in winter, the veteran Sampo and the newer Arktis. Sampo is a former Finnish government icebreaker, and its cruise includes a tour of the ship, areas normally reserved for the crew and floating among the ice in a survival suit.

Sampo, 2026-27

  • Season: 18 December 2026 to 3 April 2027, per the operator.
  • Morning cruise: 3.5 hours, with ice floating, a walk on the ice, a vessel tour, a diploma and a welcome drink. Departure from the harbour at 09:00, return around 12:30.
  • Afternoon cruise: 4 hours, 13:30 to 17:30, with a lunch buffet on board.
  • Both include entry to the SnowCastle area exhibitions.
  • We do not quote prices: the cruise page we read shows none, so check the operator's booking page.
  • Only registered passengers can enter Veitsiluoto Port, so you cannot turn up and watch.

The Arktis cruise is also listed by Visit Kemi; check the operator for its 2026-27 dates.

SnowCastle area. Be careful with the name. The operator says the world-famous snow castle "has not been built in the area for years" and has been replaced by the SnowCastle Winter Park. That park's page currently says it is closed for the 2026 season and gives no 2027 dates. Visit Kemi describes it generically as opening from mid-January to April, but that is not a confirmed date for 2027. What does run daily: SnowExperience365, an indoor ice-sculpture room (Mon-Sat 07:00 to 17:00, Sun 08:00 to 17:00 on the operator's hours page, checked 2 November 2026), plus a gemstone exhibition and a restaurant.

Other. Visit Kemi lists museums, galleries, cafés and guided tours in the town, and cycling routes for summer. For aurora it advises September to March and 9 pm to 2 am. We have not tested any of these operators.

When should you visit Kemi?

Plan around the Sampo season: 18 December 2026 to 3 April 2027. The operator's 2026-27 schedule is the only fixed date we can confirm, so build the trip around it. Our Lapland in March guide and Lapland in November guide cover month-by-month conditions for the region.

If your trip hinges on the icebreaker, book the cruise first and the rest after it, and read the operator's useful-information page before you arrive.

Where should you stay in Kemi?

Stay in town, or at the SnowCastle area. Sampo's Kemi pick-ups are at Hotel Toivola, Scandic Kemi, Hotel Merihovi and Kemi railway station, so staying at one of those saves a transfer. The operator also lists Seaside Glass Villas, with sea views, and SnowCastle Camping in the SnowCastle area.

We name these as factual examples, not recommendations, and publish no room prices because the pages we read show none. Rovaniemi has far more accommodation, which is why many travellers sleep there and take the shuttle: it is a long day, with a pick-up as early as 05:45 and a return to Rovaniemi at 16:00 to 16:30.

Is Kemi worth the detour?

Yes for the icebreaker, if the dates fit. For anything else, weigh it honestly. The cruise is a long half day, the SnowCastle Winter Park has no confirmed 2027 dates, and the town has far less to offer than Rovaniemi. The sourced case for Kemi is narrow: a frozen sea, a famous ship and an airport five minutes from town.

Our suggestion, which is editorial judgement rather than a rule: use Kemi as one night on a route between the coast and the north, or as a day trip from Rovaniemi, instead of a week-long base. If you only have three or four nights in Lapland, spend them at a fell resort or in Rovaniemi and leave Kemi for a second trip.
