What is Pyhä-Luosto like, and who is it for?
It suits people who want fell skiing and national park trails without the crowds of a big resort. Pyhä-Luosto is genuinely in Lapland, in the municipalities of Kemijärvi, Pelkosenniemi and Sodankylä, so it works as a Rovaniemi add-on. If you want nightlife and a big lift system, choose Levi or Ruka.
Pyhä is the bigger ski centre. Its own site lists 15 slopes and 9 lifts and describes the slopes as uncrowded. Luosto lists 10 slopes, 3 lifts and a magic carpet, and describes its terrain as suited to beginners, families and more experienced skiers. The two villages are 25 km apart by road 962, according to Metsähallitus, so you will pick a base and visit the other.
The national park is the main reason to come. Metsähallitus describes rugged fells and deep gorges, aapa mires and old-growth forest, and says the deepest gorge in Finland can be visited in summer and autumn. In winter you get day trails and 150 km of maintained cross-country tracks across the park and surrounding area.
Everything below comes from the resort sites, the park authority and public weather data. We have not tested the operators we name.
How do you get to Pyhä-Luosto?
Fly or take the night train to Rovaniemi, then ride the direct bus or drive. Pyhä's own site gives 130 km and 1 hour 45 minutes from Rovaniemi Airport. Luosto says it is 90 minutes from the airport. After 10 November 2026, buses run four times a day.
| Place | Distance from Pyhä | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Rovaniemi Airport | 130 km, 1 h 45 min | pyha.fi |
| Santa Claus Village | 120 km, 1 h 45 min | pyha.fi |
| Kemijärvi | 50 km, 40 min | pyha.fi |
| Kittilä Airport | 155 km, 2 h | pyha.fi |
| Ruka | 160 km, 2 h 15 min | pyha.fi |
Metsähallitus gives road distances from Rovaniemi town rather than the airport: about 115 km to Luosto and about 130 km via Kemijärvi to Pyhä. The airport is a short hop from the town, so expect the two sources to differ slightly.
The bus is the easy answer. Pyhä.fi says the winter timetable changes on 10 November 2026, after which buses run from Rovaniemi four times a day, connecting with Rovaniemi trains, flights and Santa Claus Village. Its timetable heading covers 10 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, and Pyhä.fi describes a day trip from Rovaniemi as possible. A separate bus links Kemijärvi railway station and Pyhätunturi, which suits the night train from Helsinki. Buy tickets through Matkahuolto, and check times against your flight on our Lapland airports guide.
For skiers, Metsähallitus says that you can ski between the resorts on the connecting tracks and return by SkiBus. Treat that as an experienced-skier option.
When is the best time to go to Pyhä-Luosto?
For a full ski trip, go from late December to early April. Pyhä's slope target is 20 November 2026, and another page on its site says end of November, so treat early season as uncertain. The cross-country network is fully open by week 8. For dark skies, aim for midwinter nights.
Pyhä.fi lists evening skiing on Fridays from 18 December to 26 March, with special hours on 6 December, 24 to 25 December, 26 to 28 March (Easter) and 30 April. Pyhä also says skiing continues through May, and describes almost six months of winter. Metsähallitus closes the Peurakero restricted area between 15 February and 31 May.
There is no FMI station at Pyhä or Luosto. The nearest we checked is Sodankylä Tähtelä, and Metsähallitus puts Sodankylä about 40 km from Luosto, so read this as a regional guide.
| Month | Mean temp, Sodankylä Tähtelä | Median snow depth on the 15th |
|---|---|---|
| November | -5.8 °C | 13 cm |
| December | -9.6 °C | 33 cm |
| January | -12.5 °C | 53 cm |
| February | -12.1 °C | 68 cm |
| March | -7.1 °C | 77 cm |
| April | -0.8 °C | 70 cm |
Those are 1991-2020 normals from the Finnish Meteorological Institute. Our best time to visit Lapland guide puts them in a month-by-month frame, and the March guide covers the bright end of the season.
What is there to do in Pyhä-Luosto in winter?
Ski, snowshoe and walk in the national park, then add one guided activity. Pyhä.fi lists snowshoeing, husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobile safaris, ice fishing, ice climbing, Pyhäkuru Adventure Park, ice floating, freeriding, horseback riding, snowsurfing and sauna experiences, offered by local operators.
Cross-country and winter trails. Metsähallitus counts 150 km of maintained ski tracks, for classic and skate styles, with easy flat options and hillier ones. It adds that the network opens in stages. Pyhä-Luosto Vesi Oy maintains the tracks, and you can rent skis from local entrepreneurs.
Lampivaara amethyst mine. The mine says its winter tours run from 1 November 2026 to 18 April 2027: Tuesday to Saturday in November with one departure at 12:30 from the Ukko-Luosto car park, daily from 1 December to 28 March, and Monday to Saturday from 29 March. It is closed on 24 December 2026. The winter tour includes digging your own amethyst, and the mine's winter page, checked on 2 November 2026, listed departure points with these prices:
| Departure | Time | Adult | Child (3-15) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luosto centre | 11:10 | €98 | €48 |
| Ukko-Luosto car park | 11:30 and 14:30 | €78 | €38 |
| Lampivaara café | 12:00 and 15:00 | €41 | €20 |
The café is inside the national park and cannot be reached by car. The mine says the nearest car park is 2.5 km away and the walk takes about 45 minutes, by winter hiking, skiing, snowshoes or fatbike. Check the mine's winter page for current prices before you book.
Exhibitions and aurora. Pyhä.fi lists the Visitor Centre Naava nature exhibition and the Fell Lightscapes exhibition in the Ukko-Luosto hut, which covers the Arctic sky and the northern lights. Pyhä also offers a free northern lights alert. Our northern lights guide explains the odds.
Where should you stay in Pyhä-Luosto?
Stay in Pyhä for the main ski slopes and the visitor centre. Stay in Luosto for the village centre, the amethyst shop and a spa hotel. Both offer hotels, apartments and cottages, and glass igloos or aurora rooms if you want to watch the sky from bed.
| Base | Suits | Examples from their own pages |
|---|---|---|
| Pyhä | Skiers, national park access | Pyhä.fi lists hotels, apartments, cottages, igloos and aurora rooms, and caravan areas |
| Luosto | Spa, amethyst tours, village feel | Luosto.fi names Lapland Hotels Luostotunturi and Santa's Hotel Aurora rooms, plus log cabins and glass igloos |
These are examples of types, not recommendations. Luosto.fi's accommodation page mentions snowmobiling and husky sledding nearby. Pyhä.fi shows a Ski-Inn offer of 30% off lift tickets for stays of at least four nights, so check whether your accommodation qualifies. No car is needed if you stay in one village and use the bus, but the 25 km between villages means a car or SkiBus helps.
