What is Kilpisjärvi like, and who is it for?

Kilpisjärvi is a village in Enontekiö municipality in Western Lapland, set on a lake under Saana fell near the borders with Norway and Sweden. It suits people who are happy in the cold, at ease on skis and not bothered by long drives and thin services. It's the wrong choice for a first Lapland trip.

Metsähallitus says the peak of Saana rises to 1,029 metres. The distance is the catch: the University of Helsinki's Kilpisjärvi station puts Rovaniemi about 440 km away.

A note on how this guide was made: it is research-based. We haven't been to Kilpisjärvi, and we haven't tested any operator here. If you want northern Lapland with services and easy transfers, Saariselkä is the practical alternative.

How do you get to Kilpisjärvi?

Plan on a long overland leg. Metsähallitus lists the airport in Kittilä and the Norwegian airport in Tromsø as the closest, and says night trains from Helsinki run to Kolari and Rovaniemi, the nearest stations. The station at Kilpisjärvi puts Kolari about 270 km away and says road 21 leads to the village.

None of these sources give a driving distance from either airport, and we couldn't find a primary figure. Look it up on a route planner for your travel date and add winter margin.

Enontekiö Airport: Finavia handed it to the municipality of Enontekiö on 14 July 2021. We found no scheduled airline route in primary sources, so treat it as charter-only unless your operator says otherwise. Our Lapland airports guide has the detail.

By bus: Metsähallitus lists the Arctic Route bus from Rovaniemi. The University of Helsinki's station advises you to "check bus schedules before booking your trip, especially in October, November and March" and warns that the daily connection may be suspended in those months. Our how to get to Finnish Lapland guide covers the rail and flight legs.

When is the best time to visit Kilpisjärvi?

Go in March for deep snow and the best aurora odds, or early April if you want longer days. FMI says March and early April are the best time for auroras in northern Finland, and that at Kilpisjärvi auroras appear on 75% of dark, cloudless nights.

MonthMean temperature (1991-2020, FMI)Snow depth
Mid Nov-6.5 °C (November mean)16 cm median on 15 Nov
December-10.1 °CPolar night 1 Dec to 11 Jan
January-12.2 °C
February-12.3 °C
March-8.8 °C93 cm median on 15 Mar, 94 cm on 31 Mar
April-3.5 °C

Polar night runs from 1 December to 11 January by our calculation from US Naval Observatory data. It is twilight rather than black at midday. Our winter weather guide has the method and the other places' dates.

That 75% figure needs context. FMI gives it for nights that are both dark and cloudless, not for any night you spend there. The cloud is the variable you can't control. Spend several nights and keep the evenings free. Our aurora forecast guide explains the alerts, and best time to see the northern lights compares months.

What can you do in Kilpisjärvi in winter?

The headline activities are ski touring, snowshoeing and aurora watching. Metsähallitus lists winter biking, guide and experience services, and an open wilderness hut in the Saana and Kilpisjärvi area, so there is some organised support, but the page does not show a resort-style programme.

Saana: the fell is the village's landmark. We haven't verified winter route details, so treat conditions and route choice as something to ask local guides about. Check the Metsähallitus page for Saana and Kilpisjärvi before you set out.

Malla Strict Nature Reserve: this is the one with firm rules, and they're good to know before you pack. Metsähallitus says the reserve sits by Lake Kilpisjärvi, on the edge of the Scandinavian mountains, and that the Nordkalott Trail runs through it. In winter the rules are:

  • From 1 November to 15 May, with sufficient snow cover, skiing and snowshoeing are allowed across the area. From 16 May to 31 October you may move only on foot along the marked trail.
  • Biking is prohibited all year.
  • Camping is permitted only in the designated area next to the Guohkkemašjávri / Kuohkimajärvi open and reservable wilderness huts.
  • Open fires are prohibited.

Treriksröset: Metsähallitus advertises hiking or skiing to the point where Finland, Sweden and Norway meet as a feature of Malla. We couldn't confirm a winter route length or trail marking from a primary source. Don't treat it as a casual day trip: plan it with local advice, check the weather and tell someone your route.

Is Kilpisjärvi worth the trip, and where do you stay?

It's worth it if the aurora odds, the fell and the quiet are the point. Services are very limited, so check each one before relying on it. A first-time visitor who wants Santa, restaurants and easy transfers will be happier elsewhere. The village is small, and we couldn't verify winter opening times for shops, restaurants or rentals from a primary source. For lodging, start with the Enontekiö tourism site, which Metsähallitus links for onward connections, and book early for March.

Metsähallitus's Malla page says wilderness huts by Kuohkimajärvi are open and reservable, which suits experienced ski trekkers. For everyone else, we'd stock up before arriving. Our what to wear in Lapland guide covers the layers you'll want at -12 °C and colder.

If you're weighing Kilpisjärvi against a resort base, our where to stay in Lapland guide compares them, and Lapland for adults suits a quieter trip.
