Search for this trip and the top results are forum threads, a marketplace listing for a private transfer and a route calculator. Few show a dated timetable you can check. This guide does, using Matkahuolto's journey search and the operators' own pages, all read on 2 November 2026. We haven't ridden every service listed here, and we say where a page left a gap.
How do you get from Rovaniemi to Levi?
Take the coach from Rovaniemi bus station, drive, or book a private transfer. There is no train to Levi, and no direct public link from Rovaniemi Airport that we could verify. The coach is the cheapest option and takes about the same time as driving in good conditions.
Levi's arrival page puts Rovaniemi about 170 km south of Levi and says there are frequent bus connections between the two. Matkahuolto gives the journey as approximately 2.5 hours. Here is how the options compare.
| Option | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Coach | 2h 20min to 2h 40min (Matkahuolto search, 20 Dec 2026) | Departs Rovaniemi bus station; skis carried free in winter on Eskelisen |
| Self-drive | No official figure; allow more than the coach in snow | You need winter tyres and a plan for dusk; see the driving section |
| Private taxi or minibus | Similar to driving | Quote only; we found no operator fare that was dated for this season |
| Train via Kolari | Not a Rovaniemi route | Helsinki trains reach Kolari; Levi is a further 80 km |
| Fly to Kittilä instead | Skips the road leg | Airport is 15 km from Levi |
Where do the Rovaniemi to Levi coaches leave from?
Rovaniemi bus station, not the airport. Eskelisen says its shuttles depart from the bus station, which is a short walk from the railway station. The airport is about 10 km from the bus station, and Eskelisen suggests the Airport Express or a taxi to connect.
That detail matters if you land in Rovaniemi. Budget the airport-to-station hop before you pick a coach, and don't plan a tight connection. Our Rovaniemi airport transfers guide covers the buses and taxis between the terminal and town, including the last-bus times. On the Levi end, Matkahuolto lists the arrival stop as Hissitie/Levintie, so check where that sits relative to your accommodation. Our Levi destination page has the village layout.
What is the Rovaniemi to Levi coach timetable for winter 2026-27?
Matkahuolto's journey search for Sunday 20 December 2026 showed seven departures from 07:30 to 17:10, run by three operators. Times are not the same every day, so treat this as one dated sample and search your own date. We checked on 2 November 2026.
| Departs Rovaniemi | Arrives Levi | Duration | Operator | Fare shown on 2 Nov |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 07:30 | 10:06 | 2h 36min | LaplandTours Oy | €38.00 |
| 11:10 | 13:45 | 2h 35min | OnniBus | not shown |
| 11:40 | 14:00 | 2h 20min | Eskelisen Lapin Linjat | €29.90 (saver) |
| 14:45 | 17:20 | 2h 35min | OnniBus | €31.89 |
| 15:00 | 17:20 | 2h 20min | Eskelisen Lapin Linjat | €27.90 (saver) |
| 17:00 | 19:20 | 2h 20min | Eskelisen Lapin Linjat | €27.90 (saver) |
| 17:10 | 19:50 | 2h 40min | OnniBus | €31.89 |
Fares move with the date. For a Monday departure on 2 November the same search showed €36.90 and €33.20 on the Eskelisen buses, against €27.90 to €29.90 for 20 December. The sale cut-off can also be early: for the 11:40 departure Matkahuolto showed online sales ending at 11:30, ten minutes before it leaves. Eskelisen also sells tickets on board by cash or card, but it recommends booking online.
Eskelisen says the trip "usually takes about two hours, depending on the route and the stops." Matkahuolto's results are slightly longer, which is consistent with the stops. We found no operator page that publishes a season-long timetable. The search is the source, so check it again within a week of travel. If you want a fare to quote or compare, check the current fare on Matkahuolto rather than relying on this table after 1 December 2026.
Should you drive from Rovaniemi to Levi in winter?
Drive if you want the flexibility or are carrying a lot, but don't plan it as a two-hour trip. We found no official winter driving time, so we haven't published one. The coach schedule gives a floor of about 2h 20min, and snow, dusk and reindeer add to it.
The rules and risks come from Visit Finland's driving guide, last updated March 2026:
- Tyres: winter tyres are required by law whenever weather or road conditions demand it, between 1 November and 31 March. The legal minimum tread is 3 mm, and 4 to 5 mm is safer. Hire cars are fitted with winter tyres in season, which you can confirm when you book.
- Lights: headlights must be on at all times, all year.
- Animals: yellow signs with an elk silhouette mark crossing areas. Slow down at dawn and dusk. For reindeer, stop and let them move on, because honking rarely helps.
- Emergencies: 112.
Before you set off, open Fintraffic's road weather service. It reports air temperature and road surface condition from stations updated every minute, and it carries more than 900 road cameras, so you can see the actual road. Its live map is at liikennetilanne.fintraffic.fi. In mid-December, daylight is short, so leave in the morning if you can. Our airport transfers guide lists the car rental brands at Rovaniemi Airport. One-way hire to Kittilä or Levi is not something we could verify from a primary source, so ask the rental company before you book.
Can you take the train from Rovaniemi to Levi?
No. Levi has no station, and the nearest, Kolari, is about 80 km away. VR says a connecting bus from Kolari takes around 1 hour 15 minutes. Levi's page adds that the bus meets each arriving train. That route suits travellers coming from Helsinki, not from Rovaniemi.
VR's Lapland page says night trains run to Rovaniemi, Kolari and Kemijärvi. That is useful if you are starting in Helsinki, and our Helsinki to Lapland train vs flight guide compares it with flying, including the 18 December 2026 train that reaches Kolari at 10:55. It doesn't help if you are already in Rovaniemi, because we found no VR page for a Rovaniemi to Kolari train. From Rovaniemi, the coach is the public-transport answer.
Is it better to fly to Kittilä for Levi?
Usually, if Levi is the whole trip. Kittilä Airport is 15 km from Levi, and Tunturilinjat runs an airport bus timed to scheduled flights. Finavia says Kittilä has multiple daily connections from Helsinki. Rovaniemi is the better entry only if Santa Claus Village comes first.
Levi's page lists taxis at Kittilä Airport all year and says you can book a private minibus. Finavia's Kittilä page names Tunturilinjat for Levi and Liikenne Rundgren for Ylläs, and says that outside the main tourist season transfers run on demand and need advance booking. In peak winter, that gives you a 15 km hop instead of a 170 km road leg. Our Lapland airports guide shows which airport matches which resort, and why a modest fare saving rarely survives a long transfer.
Is it worth splitting a trip between Rovaniemi and Levi?
Yes, if you have six nights or more and want both Santa and skiing. Three nights in Rovaniemi, then three or four in Levi, works, with one half day lost to the move. For five nights or fewer, pick one base.
Our Lapland itinerary guide works through the plan: fly into Rovaniemi, take the coach on day 4, and fly home from Kittilä so you never backtrack. Levi is the easy second base because the coach is 2 to 2.5 hours. The cost is real, though. You pay for the coach, you give up most of a day, and you need to pack and check out twice. If you're choosing a base for the whole trip, the where to stay guide compares them side by side. If skiing is your reason for coming, skip Rovaniemi and fly to Kittilä.
How do you get from Rovaniemi to Ylläs?
By car or taxi in about 2 hours, according to Ylläs.fi, or by a coach that took about 4 hours 13 minutes in our sample. Matkahuolto's search for 20 December 2026 showed one direct departure, at 07:30, to Äkäslompolo for €60.
That 07:30 service was run by LaplandTours and arrived at the Äkäshotelli stop at 11:43, or at the Ylläskaltio stop at 11:46. Ylläs.fi says the best way from Rovaniemi is a car or taxi, about 2 hours, and that the only bus alternative runs via Levi on days when the train arrives in Kolari, with transfer times that "can be very long". Skip the coach-and-connection plan for Ylläs. Fly to Kittilä, which Finavia puts about 35 km from Ylläs, or hire a car. The Ylläs destination page explains the two villages.
How do you get from Rovaniemi to Saariselkä?
By coach, in about 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes. Eskelisen says the route runs all year, and Matkahuolto's search for 20 December 2026 listed five departures to the Saariselkä Holiday Club stop, with fares from €40.90 to €53.00.
| Departs Rovaniemi | Arrives | Duration | Operator | Fare shown on 2 Nov |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 07:55 | 11:19 | 3h 24min | OnniBus | €46.89 |
| 11:20 | 14:44 | 3h 24min | OnniBus | €43.89 |
| 11:45 | 15:30 | 3h 45min | Eskelisen Lapin Linjat | €40.90 (saver) |
| 17:15 | 20:30 | 3h 15min | Eskelisen Lapin Linjat | €53.00 |
| 20:35 | 00:00 | 3h 25min | LaplandTours Oy | €47.50 |
We found no official road distance, so we haven't published one. Eskelisen describes the trip as "around 3-4 hours, depending on the shifts and stops", and VR's page gives a similar 3 to 4 hours for the connecting bus. If you're comparing this with flying, note that the Saariselkä destination page points to Ivalo as the airport, and our airports guide covers the shuttle. The 20:35 service reaches Saariselkä at midnight, so don't book it if your accommodation has a staffed reception.
What should you check before you travel?
Check the date, the stop and the backup. Timetables here are one dated sample, fares change, and winter roads can be slow.
- Search your own date on Matkahuolto from Rovaniemi bus station to Levi, and note the sale cut-off.
- Confirm the pickup: Rovaniemi bus station, not the airport. Add the airport-to-station transfer.
- Book a taxi backup for late arrivals or missed coaches, and ask for a fixed quote.
- If you drive, confirm the winter tyres when you book, and check Fintraffic road weather before you leave.
- Plan for dusk. Leave in the morning, since reindeer and elk are most active at dawn and dusk.
- Recheck every fare and time by 1 December 2026, and again before travel.
